Bayou City Waterkeeper

Bayou City Waterkeeper (BCWK) is a water protection organization serving the Greater Houston region since 2001. BCWK's mission is to advance justice, health, and safety for the waters and people of Greater Houston through bold legal action, community science, and creative, grassroots policy. We concentrate our work in "water justice zones" in which lower-wealth, Black and Brown Houstonians disproportionately face cumulative environmental burdens and historical disinvestment in flood and water infrastructure, which leave them more vulnerable to compounding issues of chronic localized flooding, aging infrastructure, and impaired water quality. Our water justice zones are in Northeast Houston, Baytown, and the Houston Ship Channel within Harris County, as well as Galveston to Freeport. This community-centered approach allows our work to respond directly to impacted communities and connect their experience to opportunities for policy change.
