Fiscally Sponsored: National Police Accountability Project
Peoples' Counsel educates survivors of police violence about their constitutional rights, defends their dignity in court, and connects them with supportive resources. We are a small, diverse, Black-woman-led team operating primarily in Houston, Texas, where we run a hotline for survivors in Harris County to share their experiences and get help. To our knowledge, our police accountability hotline is the only of its kind in the country. Whereas most legal advocacy organizations work from the top down—starting from the interests of a privileged few—we work from the ground up. All of our work is guided by the needs and priorities of the survivors we speak to everyday. In addition to our hotline work, we fight for accountability alongside our community partners and bring attention to systemic issues. This work is an important step toward reducing the harm of police violence, helping marginalized communities heal and flourish, and ensuring that self-determination and community well-being are prioritized above all.
